Happy Cinco de Mayo, May 5th!!! 8th grade Religion: Youth for Human Rights video and assignment posted to Google Classroom 7th ELA: Today you will be writing a "Free Verse" poem. Your topic for this poem is the "Civil War." The Battle of Wilson's Creek is close to home. You have been learning about many battles in Social studies. So this is a cross curricular project. You may write about anything that you have learned about from your study of different battles in Mrs. Nanneman's class. Your poem must be eight lines long or longer, Make sure to give your poem a title. Free verse is a literary device that can be defined as poetry that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm, and does not have to rhyme or have a fixed form. Such poems are without rhythm and rhyme schemes, do not follow regular rhyme scheme rules, yet still provide artistic expression. You will still need to use poetic devices such as alliteration, personification, imagery, similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, etc. You do not have to use all of these. Carefully chosen words can help you create a poem that sounds like the situation, emotion, or object you are trying to portray. After reading your poem, as a reader, I need to know that you are talking about the Civil war or a Battle. (DO NOT BE GRAPHIC IN YOUR DETAILS IF THEY ARE GOREY). Here is an example of a Free Verse Poem about a roller coaster: Thrill Ride Up. Up. Click, click. Wind blows sharp in my ears. My heart jumps. Skips. It’s up. It’s up higher. It’s up, up the highest. Hands grasp at the clouds. Then a forever pause. Still. Waiting. Finally. Whoosh! Steep drop down, down, down. After reading the poem, knowing it was about a roller coaster, did you see how it related to your topic? Look how the short words move quickly as you read them. Then in the middle, the longer words at the top of the coaster, the pause before the drop, actually force your reading to slow and “forever pause.” The repetition of the word “up” creates a jolting feeling. This is not the entire poem, as it still needs a punchy ending. Here is another example of a free verse poem: At The Beach At the beach towel and sunscreen in hand I hear the sounds of the crashing waves The smell of sea salt in the air Overwhelming my nose At the beach my family and I gather having fun building sand castles seaweed tangled between my toes jumping in the cool waves We splish and splash the coolness is soothing to me At the beach I feel the sun’s rays bringing a tan to my skin but I don’t mind I welcome the warm breeze flowing through my hair the warm sand beneath my feet I wiggle the grainy sand between my toes footprints left in the sand At the beach I see the growing tide I notice the never-ending ocean I hear the squawks of the seagulls above At the beach I feel relaxed and calm I feel my best 8th ELA: Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl This is our last long day.
